Pieropan

The Azienda Agricola Pieropan was founded by the Pieropan family in 1890. Since then the winery’s philosophy demanded high quality for its products as well as technological innovations while respecting the Soave zone's œnological traditions. Three generations later, in the 1970s, his grandson Leonildo was responsible for a gigantic improvement on the quality of Pieropan’s wines, by eliminating the vineyards on the lower flat lands and replacing them with new vineyards in hills in the heart of Soave (specifically Calvarino, Pigno, Becco, Boiolo-La Rocca and Tondo). He also researched and adopted endangered local varietals such as particular clones of the Garganega grape which had fallen out of favour with grape growers because of their low yields. However the vine produces high quality fruit. By increasing the vine density per hectare and finally by drastically reducing yields of fruit per vine through the adoption of a severe pruning (potatura corta) and the unprecedented green harvest Pieropan’s level of quality jumped dramatically ahead of anything any other winery was doing in the zone. Leonildo is also credited with being one of the first producers to adopt organic farming practices in the region. Needless to say that his extravagant approach caused some puzzlement and skepticism amongst the wine producers community, but very soon his viticultural methods became a benchmark for all the others. To accomplish the full transformation that Leonildo envisioned, he embarked in a thorough restructuring of the winery, by adopting ultramodern presses, sophisticated refrigeration units, and a state-of–the-art bottling line. He still kept important traditions, such as using exclusively indigenous yeasts for the vinification process. The entire family shares his vision and enthusiasm. His wife Teresita is an indispensable asset to the business, by assuming the role of general manager of marketing for the “Azienda Agricola”. His son Andrea is now the viticulturalist and continues the family tradition in the vineyards and his other son Dario also recently joined the family business.
