Giovanni Almondo

Piemonte

Among the cognoscenti of winegrowers of Piemonte, there is one producer outside of Barolo and Barbaresco who is among the greats of Italy's most distinguished wine region. His name is Domenico Almondo and his wines, grown in the fine sand soil of Roero, 1/2 hour from Barolo, absolutely sing of the chiseled precision of the terroir. There are 12 hectares of vineyards under cultivatio, of which 6 are Arneis, 4 are Nebbiolo, 1.5 are Barbera and .5 are Brachetta. The Arneis wine is cultivate in the highest area, at about 380 metres above sea level, on sandy soils. The average yield is approximately 8000 kilograms of grape per hectare. Arneis is the white grape of Italy's Piedmont region. It produces a lightly styled white wine with gentle citrus edged orchard fruits that recalls pear and apricot and a slightly bitter floral note that can resemble almonds on the palate. Traditionally Arneis was produced as a slightly sweet wine and several producers continue this tradition. Giovanni Almondo is a family estate that has created a considerable reputation from twelve hectares, and is unusual in Piedmont for offering whites and reds of equal renown. Almondo’s Arneis vines are to be found on the highest slopes of the estate, at 380 metres above sea level, on sandy soil. The Bricco delle Ciliegie is a single site, notable for its easterly exposure, which gives the vines plentiful morning sun and protects them from the fierce afternoon heat. A vibrant expression of Arneis, this wine shows aromas of apricot, greengage and red apple; a beautifully textured palate with a hint of almond, and a long elegant finish.
