Fontodi

Toscana

Today It is hard to find any article about Chianti Classico wines that doesn’t mention Fontodi. The wines produced by the estate are Tuscan jewels and many authorities point to Fontodi as a model estate and an indicator of the direction of Tuscan wine and Italian wine in general. Grapes used in their wines are grown on the 42 hectare estate. Their total production is 26,000 cases. Fontodi has planted the best clones of Sangiovese that are available to Italian viticulture. The clones are a result of the Chianti 2000 Project that identified the best types of Sangiovese for the zone and as well for individual microclimates. The project is the fruit of the research and development side of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico. The logo of this consortium can be found on the neck labels of many Chianti Classico wines – a black rooster. Fontodi also has high standards in the vineyards. Yields are low, the vines are meticulously pruned and minimal intervention with Nature is the order of the day. You will find no herbicides or pesticides in their filosofia of wine making. Grass grows freely between the rows and unpicked sub-standard grapes are cut away and are left in the vineyards, subjected to Nature’s way.
