Corte Sant' Alda

Veneto

In 1985 Marinella Camerani made the decision to live in the country to pursue her dream of returning to her family roots living on the land. She has invested all of her resources and energy in revitalizing what had been her family’s weekend country estate above the village of Mezzane de Sotto. Prior to her interest in wine production there had been no serious winemaking endeavor there. Marinella set about the arduous task of restoring the vineyards, which, as she likes to point out, are her great passion. She began the first vinification completely without any serious winemaking background.
Making the most of her own knowledge and taking the advice of expert consultants, she established an identity for the wines of her estate by creating a sterling example of the zone’s most representative wine, Amarone. Amarone is a wine that was initially abandoned in favour of less demanding products. Her wines have achieved an increasingly precise and convincing character as she seeks to reconcile and harmonize terroir and modernity by making a soft and rounded style with tradition. The vines were originally planted on traditional pergolas but gradually these have been converted to more modern vine training systems, such as guyot, which are suitable for reducing yields and ensuring even ripening. With the Covina and Molinara varietals the ripening continues until the middle of October. Marinella’s goal is to bring out the fruit in wines that were traditionally penalized by the zone by being overly alcoholic due to high sugar levels. They were also often tired as a result of spending too long in unsuitable barrels. Her old barrels have been replaced by new barriques and new truncated conical oak barrels.
It is Marinella’s fervent aim and hope, along with other top producers in the area, to restore the DOC Valpolicella area to its rightful place among Italy’s outstanding wine production zones.
Production of this small estate is just 7000 cases.
