Colli di Catone

Lazio

Colli di Catone was founded in 1974 with the specific goal of producing and marketing a high quality Frascati. In contrast to the regional wine making industry’s mass production approach, Colli di Catone wanted to produce fragrant and memorable wines that showed the true character of the two Malvasias- del Lazio and di Candia.
For six generations the Pulcini family had been making wine on the estate and at the age of 33, Antonio Pulcini was put in charge of the technical and commercial operations of the company.
Pulcini realized there was great potential for single vineyard wines from the estate and he began new research. By 1983 he was ready to produce wine from particular "cru" vineyards. Yields were reduced to just 30-40 quintals of grapes per hectare through drastic bunch thinning during the month of July. The wines produced included the region’s white grapes, Malvasia del Lazio and Grechetto Antico.
Research continued with the planting of international black grape varieties Pinto Noir, Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon as well as Merlot.
The company continues to strive for improvement in the quality of its wines above any other factors. In June 2001 at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, their dessert wine Passione won the silver medal in a field of the world’s top producers of naturally sweet wine.
